Frequently asked questions

Why should you add text-to-speech to your online content, and who does it help?

Text-to-speech with word-by-word highlighting helps people hear and see text at the same time. This makes reading easier by reducing mental effort and guiding the eyes through the content. Text-to-speech is especially helpful for people with dyslexia, ADHD, or those learning English. It benefits many others too, around 20% of the world’s population has some form of reading challenge. Adding text-to-speech to your online content improves accessibility and makes reading easier for more people.

How does SpeechStream work?

SpeechStream makes it simple and cost-effective to add text-to-speech and reading support to your content. To get started, just add one script to your website’s HTML. SpeechStream will automatically load a toolbar that gives users access to TTS and other tools. If you want a custom setup, SpeechStream supports flexible options for developers, with hundreds of function calls to fine-tune the user experience. SpeechStream also provides real-time audio, reading text aloud instantly. No need to pre-record audio or manually link MP3 files. Best of all, because SpeechStream is built into your content, users don’t need to install anything, it just works.

What voice technology does SpeechStream use?

SpeechStream works with multiple voice providers. This provides us with the flexibility to source the very best voices from different voice companies for your projects. You can access:

  • Standard voices
  • Neural network voices
  • High-quality AI voices

SpeechStream offers multiple voice choices in each language, helping you find the best option for your project.

Can SpeechStream be used in assessments?

Yes! SpeechStream is a great choice for online assessments in education and the workplace.

  • Using a secure browser? No problem! Because SpeechStream is built into the assessment, it won’t be blocked.
  • Need text-to-speech for certain sections but not others? We provide tools to control access.
  • Have industry-specific words that need to be pronounced correctly? SpeechStream lets you customize pronunciations.

Can SpeechStream read math content?

Yes. SpeechStream supports different ways of displaying math online:

  • Our symbol filter adds voice to basic math symbols typed directly into content
  • If math is added as an image, and Alternative text (alt text) is included, then SpeechStream will read it aloud in the correct way
  • SpeechStream is also compatible with math created in MathML and MathJax. It will highlight each character in an equation as it reads aloud. If the default speech output isn’t right, you can override it with custom spoken math.

What support is available for developers?

We have a self-serve knowledge base with setup guides, API references, demos, and release notes. We have a dedicated team who will guide you through implementation. The team will provide support by email or web calls. Trial access is available to test SpeechStream in your content before going live.
